What is "Archival"?
There is currently no exact definition for "archival"--different organizations define it in different ways and there is no universal testing standard for longevity.
However, for giclée prints, this term is loosely used to describe paper and inks that will last an extremely long time without fading or deteriorating if kept under controlled conditions.
Every print and painting you see in a museum is of archival-grade.
Some indicators that determine if a paper is of archival quality:
- Acid Free
- Lignin Free
- 100% Alpha-Cellulose
Acid Free paper can be made from any grade of cellulose and means the paper is lignin- and sulfur-free. Acid free paper has the capability to last between 500 and 1000 years.
Alpha-Cellulose is the highest grade of cellulose, as it is the most stable. When a paper has a high percentage of Alpha-Cellulose, you are guaranteed a stable, permanent medium for inks.
A similar definition is appropriate for archival metal prints as well, though, due to their nature, metal prints will not last as long as giclée prints.
Depending on the grade of metal and the grade of dye sublimation inks, "archival" metal prints can last between 60 to 100 years or more if kept in ideal conditions (away from direct sunlight and UV exposure or any extreme temperatures). We have chosen to work with print makers who take quality very seriously.
Photo Printing Pros, our metal print makers, only use ChromaLuxe® aluminum and Epson specialty inks with their customized Epson printer, which is precisely calibrated for ChromaLuxe® aluminum.
Should I Spray My Giclée Print?
Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Usually, if you are not planning on framing your print behind UV glass, you should spray your print with a protective varnish. This is especially true for matte finish prints.
For semi-glossy, glossy, and metallic prints, this varnish can leave visible residue and actually reduce the glossy appearance, so we highly advise that you avoid any kind of protective varnish or spray.

Installation and Care

How Do I Install My Print?
Your ChromaLuxe® aluminum print will be fitted with the frame of your choice and will come with a French Cleat that needs to be attaached to the wall with screws or nails. All frame choices come with a metal lip that slides into the French Cleat.
Your rolled giclée print will need to be matted and/or framed in order to be displayed. Learn more under the tab "General FAQs".
Other hanging hardware options:
If you prefer wire-and-hook systems rather than French cleats, we recommend the brand STAS. We use STAS hanging systems throughout the gallery. You may want to consider wire-and-hook systems if you rotate your collection frequently and/or don't want too many holes in the middle of your wall.
How Do I Illuminate My Print?
Your limited edition ChromaLuxe® aluminum print will look good in any lighting. However, here are our suggestions to really make the images burst to life:
1. Light directly with a spotlight or artlight
2. Use bulbs with color temperature in the range of 3000K to 5000K
3. Use bulbs with a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 or better
We use SORAA bulbs throughout the gallery, which meets all of the above criteria.
Our limited edition giclée prints are printed on metallic pearl paper, which mimic the sheen of metal prints, so we also recommend the above criteria for giclée prints.
How Do I Clean My Print?
For ChromaLuxe® aluminum prints and giclée prints behind glass, most of the time, the only thing you will need to clean your print is a basic microfiber cloth. Microfiber clothes can be found in grocery stores, hardware stores, and office supply stores. A simple wipe down will remove most dust and fingerprints.
Avoid using anything abrasive like paper towels, as this will cause micro-scratches that can build up and eventually show over time.
For stubborn stains, use a little bit of denatured alcohol, acetone, or goo-gone applied first to a microfiber cloth.
Over time, prints will inevitably catch and collect dust, so it is a good idea to wipe down your print monthly to keep them looking their absolute best.
